This decorative bowl is made from a real dried gourd. It's surprising to know that this rustic tabletop decor began as a seedling on a farm! I use dried gourds that come from farms in the United States. I cut the tops off and clean out the middle just as you would a fresh fall pumpkin. The artwork features fall oak leaves and acorns encircling the rim of the bowl. The artwork is drawn using wood-burning techniques, I create added texture by carving a stippled effect into the gourd. I hand paint the fall foliage with translucent stains in warm earthy tones. A finishing wax enhances and reveals the natural beauty of the gourd shell. I leave the inside of the bowl in its' natural state because it helps to remind us that this is not a piece of manufactured plastic, but a real vegetable, grown in the great outdoors.

Gourd bowls make a unique addition to your table decor. They look lovely just sitting by themselves, and for this shape, I just love filling it with pretty seasonal candy. You can add some dried flowers for fun. Keep in mind the gourds are dried, and therefore very lightweight. If the flowers are a little top-heavy, you can just place a rock or random household item in the bottom for some extra weight and stability.
